HUD Improvements
September 1st, 2020

Howdy folks. I can't believe it's already September! I have this weird thing with Covid where I simultaneously perceive time as going too fast and too slow at the same time... basically I can't wait to get out of the house again when this is all over.

I've made some big improvements to the HUD in my game, and added a few new gameplay aspects. The player now has a shield that depletes before health, and it also replenishes itself when the player is not in combat. I also touched up the weapon indicator in the bottom left, and added a few more cosmetic items to the inventory menu. I also started on what I call the "Move Bar," which is at the bottom center of the screen; basically it gives a visual to the cooldown time for each special move the player uses. I also added a speed boost function, which can be seen on said Move Bar.

The HUD looks a little blocky and simple right now, but at the moment I'm just trying to lay things about before I make things look a little nicer. I think going forward I want to focus on using the particle system in Unity to help emphasize what is happening to the player, i.e. an indication that shields are down or that the speed boost is active.

That's all for now. Enjoy this goal I scored recently!
